The Honda Civic has the reputation for being an all-around excellent small car. We'd argue that it's one of the best compact cars, if not the gold standard in its class. The Civic is a thoughtfully designed vehicle with a high-quality interior, plenty of standard features-including the Honda Sensing suite-and exceptional fuel economy.

Even better, Honda offers a range of body styles, from a traditional sedan to a sporty coupe to a hatchback. If you're searching for the perfect compact car, keep reading for an overview of the 2020 Honda Civic, and you won't be disappointed.

What's New for the 2020 Honda Civic
The Civics' sedan and coupe models received updates in 2019 and are unchanged in 2020, but the hatchback model gets styling updates, new features, and revamped trim levels. The headlights, grille, wheels, and front and rear bumpers are all new. The interior is slightly different, and Honda has added additional sound deadening to quiet the cabin.

The 7.0" touchscreen infotainment system that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and keyless entry with push-button start, is now standard on the Sport hatchback. The EX hatchback gets an upgraded power-adjustable driver's seat. And the Sport Touring model now offers a six-speed manual transmission option, which was previously only available on the Sport hatchback trim level.

Drive Performance
While the Civics' four-cylinder engine is powerful, the turbocharged engine is terrific. It quickly pulls away from stoplights with light and crisp action. If you come across a Honda Civic review, you'll find comments that prove that the Civic strikes a true balance between driver engagement and comfort.

The all-new Honda Civic is a joy to drive with responsive steering, athletic driving dynamics, and a smooth ride. It's well-weighted with firm brakes that offer an excellent feel, making the drive quality just right. If you're looking for a sporty ride, you should consider the Sport versions, which enable quicker steering.

Trim Options
The new 2020 Honda Civic comes in five trim levels: LX, Sport, EX, EX-L, and Touring (or Sport Touring for the hatchback model). The Si is in a class of its own, offered in both coupe and sedan form. The Type R is hatchback only.

The LX and Sport coupes and sedans have a base 2.0-liter engine, but the EX and all higher trims, and all hatchbacks, have the more powerful 1.5-liter turbo. The Sport and Sport Touring trims have slightly firmer suspension than the others. The Si and Type R are even sportier and are exclusively offered with a stick shift.

The LX sedan and coupe come with the 158-horsepower four-cylinder engine, while the hatchback has the 174-horsepower turbo-four. The sedan comes with a manual transmission, but the coupe and hatchback have a continuously variable automatic transmission. To purchase a sedan with CVT is an additional $800.

The base features across the board are a 5" Bluetooth, four-speaker stereo, automatic climate control, a USB port, cloth seats, and a multi-angle rearview camera. All base Civic models also have the Honda Sensing Suite, which includes safety features such as forward-collision warning, lane departure warning, a collision mitigation braking system, adaptive cruise control, and road departure warning.

All Sport models have the 7" touchscreen display, Apple Car Play and Android Auto, an eight-speaker stereo, and additional USB port, push-button start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and proximity keyless entry. The sedan and come are standard with the base engine, while the hatchback has the turbo-four. Each body style comes standard with a manual transmission with the option to add a CVT to each.

Every EX has the previously mentioned features, plus SiriusXM satellite radio, HD radio, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a moonroof, and Honda LaneWatch blind-spot monitoring. The sedan and hatchback models also get an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, while the coupe gets a premium, 10-speaker sound system. The hatchback comes with the 180-horsepower turbo-four, but the others feature the 174-horsepower turbo-four. CVT is standard for all three body types.

The Civic EX-L is only available in the sedan and hatchback body types. Both offer leather-trimmed seats and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The sedan has the 174-horsepower engine, but the hatchback gets the 180-horsepower engine. Both have engines mated to the CVT.

The Touring and Sport Touring models gain a navigation system, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and upgraded stereos with ten speakers in the coupe and sedan models and 12 speakers in the hatchback. Power-adjustable front passenger seats and heated rear outboard seats are standard on the sedan and hatchback. The Sport Touring comes with a manual transmission with the option to add the CVT.

Interior and Comfort
While the Civic is has a sleek appearance, the interior is roomy and offers ample storage space.
The interior of the sedan is one of the roomiest in its class. Honda has added several thoughtfully designed storage cubbies throughout the cabin, and the sedan's trunk offers more space than most small cars. If you require more cargo space, check out the hatchback model. The coupe offers more style than practicality.

The Civic has solid crash-test scores, making it an excellent option for drivers who prioritize safety. Every Civic comes with a plethora of driver-assistance features that include forward-collision warning and automatic high-beams. Key safety features include standard lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the 2020 Honda Civic (all models except the Type-R) it's Top Safety Pick in the small call category.
