Crossovers can never really compare to the versatility of a quality minivan when it comes to efficiently hauling people or payload, especially when that minivan is the 2020 Honda Odyssey

The Odyssey is possibly the most overtly family-oriented vehicle available. It's unapologetically a minivan-a parenting tool. But the kids love it! Keep reading to learn what's new for the 2020 Honda Odyssey and why you should test drive one today.

What's New in 2020
The Odyssey's big news is in the back. In every trim level except for the base LX, the second-row seat is dubbed "Magic Slide," with outboard seats that slide side-to-side. This movement brings the kids closer together or further apart. It also provides easy access to the third row and creates room for a middle seat-which ups the total capacity to eight.

This is an exciting option compared to the far-sliding captain's chairs of the Toyota Sienna and Kia Sedona, or the Stow 'n Go seats of the Chrysler Pacifica. To turn your Odyssey into a cargo van, you'd have to physically remove the Magic Slide seats. Besides additional USB ports, a user-friendly touchscreen for the parents in the front, various places to store handheld electronics, there's a new CabinWatch camera that lets you keep an eye on the kids in the back.

CabinTalk is another feature that allows those in the front the ability to speak to passengers in the back over the rear speakers and wireless headphones. Also new for 2020 is the 25th Anniversary accessory package, which incorporates a touch of tasteful chrome. Plus, the 10-speed automatic transmission with Idle Stop is standard on every trim level-it was previously reserved for the highest Touring and Elite models.

Features and Options
There are five Odyssey trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L, Touring, and Elite.
The base LX seats seven passengers, while the other trims have the second-row Magic Slide seats that ups the passenger count to eight.

The LX includes 18" wheels, rear privacy glass, a backup camera, push-button start, power front seats, automatic climate control, and cloth upholstery. There's also a "conversation mirror" for keeping a watchful eye on rear passengers, two front USB ports, and a seven-speaker sound system that features a 5" color display, Bluetooth connectivity, and an auxiliary auto jack.

The EX takes things up a notch with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control.

Other upgrades include body-colored mirrors and door handles, power-sliding doors, tri-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, the CabinControl remote app, and an 8" Display Audio touchscreen system that includes Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and SiriusXM satellite radio.

The EX-L trim level adds a sunroof, a power life-gate, first- and second-row leather seats, driver memory functions, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and two extra USB ports in the second row.

There's an optional package available for the EX-L, called EX-L w/Navi/RES, that includes a navigation system, a rear-seat entertainment system, a Blu-Ray player, an HDMI input, built-in streaming apps and the CabinTalk PA system we went over earlier.

The Touring model boasts LED headlights and fog lights, front and rear parking sensors, a hands-free power liftgate, the HondaVac integrated vacuum, in-car Wi-Fi, the CabinWatch back-row camera monitor and everything in the EX-L w/Navi/RES package mentioned above.

The cream of the crop Elite model has 19" wheels, automatic wipers, acoustic front and rear door glass, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless smartphone charging, and a sound system with 11 speakers.

The 25th Anniversary package, which celebrates a quarter-century of the Odyssey, features chrome accents, special badging, and available 19" wheels. This purely cosmetic package costs between $1,500-$2,800, depending on whether you opt for the 19" wheels.

The Odyssey accelerates with surprising ease. While it's not fast, it's quicker than you might expect for a minivan. The only powertrain offered is the 3.5-liter V6 rated at a healthy 280 hp and 262 pound-feet of torque matched with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The Honda Odyssey 2020 isn't loud, but it has no problem letting you know it means business. Its fuel economy is improved by features like direct fuel injection and cylinder deactivation. When you're running on fewer than six pots, active engine mounts keep things smooth. Regardless of the model, you can expect to get 19 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 22 mpg combined.

People love the Honda Odyssey because it's incredibly useful. Depending on its configuration, the van has room for seven or eight passengers, and comfort is one of its strong suits. The Odyssey has comfortable relaxed-fit front bucket seats with a spacious, plush second-row. Surprisingly, the third-row bench is adult-friendly, offering unexpected room for long legs and knees. The back also features cup holders and air vents.

There is a plethora of storage cubbies to keep things organized, and enough power ports to keep everyone in the van charged and satisfied. With the seats removed, the Odyssey can handle a load of 4-by-8 sheets of building material.

Every model comes with anti-lock brakes, stability control, 3-row side-curtain airbags, and front-side airbags. All but the base model have the Honda Sensing driver assistance technology suite. Notable tech includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, steering assist, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high beams, and rear cross-traffic alert systems.

The Odyssey received the government's top 5-star crash scores for overall, front, and side protection. It was named the Top Safety Pick by the nonprofit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for its best-possible scores in all crash tests-plus LATCH ease of use and crash-prevention.
